Picea glauca Family: Hardwood Country of Origin: United States The tree: White spruce is a large tree native to the northeastern part of Minnesota; and where it is found to predominant in the stand, there are only 79,000 acres of this forest type. It reacshes heights of 100 feet, and diameters over 20 inches on good sites. It is quite tolereant of shade, grows slowly in the understory and responds well to release. White spruce is generally found in mixed stands of balsam fir, aspen and paper birch. The best white spruce are found in heavy clayy soils.
