The tree:
Formerly known as Tasmanian blackwood because most of the timber has come from that part of Australia, Acacia melanoxylon—the tree—has a much wider natural habitat. It also occurs in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, and the south-eastern corner of South Australia. It varies in form from a small mountain shrub to one of the largest acacias in Australia. When at its best, as in the wetter, low-lying parts of north-west Tasmania, it attains heights around 35 m and diameters of 1.0—1.5 m. In its natural habitat, Australian blackwood grows from near sea level in the south of Tasmania to an altitude of 1250-1500 m in northern New South Wales.
