Juglans regia L.
Family: Juglandaceae
Hardwood
Country of Origin: Europe, Asia Minor, China
The tree:
Juglans regia grows to a height of 20 to 30 m. an interesting point is that the walnut stands so closely associated with France and Italy (as a source of wood for ecclesiastical carving, for example) did not grow there naturally. The seed came originally from Persia, whence it was carried westwards by invading armies, merchants, and travelers generally.
The Wood:
Walnut of course is one of the worlds very finest decorative woods. The heartwood of J. regia in grey-brown with almost black streaks; it is generally more variable in color than J. nigra, which is typically a uniform dark purple-brown. By contrast, the sapwood of both is almost white. European walnut is a medium-textured wood that dries slowly, but once dry, remains moderately stable in use. It works easily and is noted for its excellent finish. It is superior wood for carving.
